Google changes the algorithm for SEO almost every day and they intentionally bounce rankings around, to keep SEO experts guessing.  Some changes are tiny while others (such as Google Panda and Google Penguin) seriously shake things up.

If you try too hard at SEO, or react too quickly, or don’t know what you are doing then when these updates come you can get seriously hit by Google and it will take a long time to recover.
